Potential for Negative Emissions by Carbon Capture and Storage From a Novel Electric Plasma Calcination Process for Pulp and Paper Mills

The pulp and paper industry has a high potential to contribute negative emissions through carbon capture storage (CCS) applied existing processes. However, there is need investigate how CCS solutions also can be combined with implementation of other emerging technologies in mills. This investigates the integration novel calcination process two kraft mills evaluates its combination CO 2 from plant. alternative uses electric gas-plasma technology steam slaking allows replacing conventional fuel-driven lime kilns driven by electricity. generates pure, biogenic, stream, which provides an opportunity achieve at relatively lower costs. reduction greenhouse gas when kiln plasma concept depends strongly on intensity grid electricity, whether fossil fuel or biomass was used as kiln. If replaced electricity associated very low emissions, avoided reach ~50 kt/a for smaller mill investigated (ca 400 kt per year) almost 100 larger 700 year). Further emission reductions could then achieved electrified process, potentials 95 164 kt/a, respectively, costs estimated 36–60 EUR/tCO .
